An inside groove caliper (available in vernier, dial, and digital models) is a specialized precision metrology tool engineered to measure the internal diameter, width, and geometric profiles of recessed grooves, slots, and undercuts buried inside a bore or cylinder. Standard calipers feature flat, knife-edge upper jaws designed solely for smooth cylinders. If you attempt to measure an internal channel with standard jaws, the flat edges bridge over the recess and cannot reach the outer walls. An inside groove caliper overcomes this by utilizing specially shaped, narrow, outward-pointing tips or pins at the end of extended jaws.
