An outside groove caliper (also referred to as an external groove caliper) is a precision metrology tool specifically engineered to measure the diameter, bottom width, and geometric spacing of external slots, channels, or recesses machined onto a cylindrical workpiece.
Standard calipers feature flat, broad jaw surfaces. If you attempt to clamp them onto an external groove, the jaw faces span across the top edges of the slot rather than sinking into it. An outside groove caliper overcomes this by utilizing raised, inward-pointing knife-edge, flat, or ball tips at the absolute ends of its jaws. This allows the main body of the jaws to clear the larger outer sections of a shaft while the tips drop perfectly into the channel.
